This is our current rig, as it sits ready for another trip. Once you reach four children, a pickup no longer works for comfortable long distance travel. We searched for a vehicle that would satisfy our requirements. We needed to pull a camper, needed an all weather vehicle that would climb up to our house in the winter, and we preferred a diesel. What we found was a 12 passenger extended length Ford van with a Powerstroke diesel. It is a 2002, and has had a quigley conversion to four wheel drive, with all the components that would normally be under a one ton Ford pickup. It suited all our needs quite well. During towing, it is not as stable as our pickup was (a 1997 F-350 crew cab long bed 4×4), mainly because of the long overhang in the back. This usually means that I have to run a little slower, which really fits into our premise anyway. Overall, it serves us well, and always gets looks in the campgrounds. There are not a lot of four wheel drive passenger vans out there.
For camping with kids, this has become a surprisingly versatile vehicle. It is easy to pack, what with 4 feet behind the rear seat, and can hold quite a lot. We also installed a front mount hitch under the bumper, and can carry four bicycles there.
